Learning to solder tiny SMD components with a hotplate - JLCPCB
Third time lucky? It's time to give SMD soldering another go with another new toy. This time, it's a hot plate. Well, actually, two hot plates. One tiny one, and one slightly ess tiny one. It wasn't as easy as I expected, but isn't that always the way?

Learning to solder tiny SMD components again - With hot air this time!

Learning to solder tiny SMD components with a soldering iron

SMD soldering is something that I've put off for ages. I finally decided to give it a go with the soldering iron and I have to admit, I'm not a massive fan. It's doable, for sure, it's not that difficult after a little practice and in some ways, it's a lot faster and easier than dealing with through-hole components, but it sure is fiddly! The soldering irons used in this video are the TS100 and...

HA! Clever using the same form factor as the Arduino!
15:15 what if you just bridge them? and what airflow are you using?
Part 2👀?!
Love your will and original idea and video ! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was good. I picked up two of these for a podcast studio I'm building out. Thx! Seems that these settings are a bit dark in my office, but I'll give them a shot in the studio later. I have two 200w tungsten lights with diffusers.
i go that for like 0.5$ + what temp u . use bec i dont want damage the pad
I usually have my iron set between 320-350C so I can keep contact to as short a time as possible without things sapping so much heat that I gotta wait for it to heat up again for the next bit.
@@JohnAldred im using 270c + i have low wire melting point form what i learn 350c for desoldering , i thinks its risky
This triggered me ;)
Haha, sorry! :)
Would it be possible to regulate a mobile cooking plate to get something like this?
It's definitely possible, but I'm not sure how efficient it would be. Most cooking hotplates don't have a flat surface, so there's a lot of air between the hot surface and most of the board. So, it would likely require more juice to get the board up to temp. What you could look at is converting an old iron. I've seen a few of those. Electronoobs has a good video about that. The principles and circuits he shows should work with a cooking hotplate, too.
Hi John, I agree with your assesment, the solder paste application was the cause of your problem. The syriinge approach does not really work with small components, the stencil with the correct solder paste thta has not expired would have given you a much better outcome. One of the problems with solder paste is that it needs to be stored at or below 25 dec C - you would need to check the specific paste you are using for its storage requirements. I buy solder paste from local suppliers as i am hoping it would give a greater probability that it was shipped and stored correctly.
Thanks, Andrew! Yeah, I think you might be right on the solder expiring. There's no date on it or the packaging and it was purchased fairly recently, but there's no telling how long it was sitting in some random warehouse in the wrong conditions. Are there any particular brands or specific types of (leaded) solder paste you'd recommend?
@@JohnAldred Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately I have no specific recommendation for you on the supplier recommendations. Before I start any SMD work, I test how the consistency of the paste and if it is not smooth, I dump it and buy another. I take great pains to store my paste in a cool place, if I get a year out of it I am pleased.
Impressively intricate and precisioned PCB soldering with informative and interesting presentations. Look forward to your next video.
Thanks Peter! :)

Finally a video with an actual demo of the affect on the footage ffs. Thanks!
I dont understand why peapole are not using pla+. I have printed some flagholders, cupholders in regular pla. it has been outside on the boat in sun and snow for about 3 years, and its just as strong as when i first printed it.
I am part of a small community group working in the UK developing photogrammetry techniques for use in the recording and preservation of historic buildings, landscapes, and artifacts. While there are many commercial contractors who undertake photogrammetry surveys, we are focusing on helping local community’s to take on the historic building that they love so they can care for them and help preserve them for future generations. We have become quite good at undertaking external work using drone 3D mapping scans, but we are finding the work to the internal structures of building difficult and unreliable. This is mainly down to the quality and consistency of the overlaps in the digital imaging at capture stage. Ideally an overlap of 75% front and 70% side overlap of each image in both directions is ideal for the photogrammetry software (Agisoft Metashape) I am thinking along the lines of a computer controlled camera stop motion rig that could calculate the overlaps based on the focal length of the lens and then run an automated sequence of movements to make the correct image captures. We could then set the stop motion rig up on one side of the room or space and run the sequence and obtaining images with the correct overlaps I would love to have a fuller conversation with you and would be happy to show you some of the work we do if this is of any interest.
Hey Mortun, apologies for the delay, I only just spotted this. Feel free to shoot me an email. :)
J1 s ? Cura add
Unfortunately, I don't have the J1, so I've no idea how to create a profile for that one. :)
Hi John, do you have any tips on how to maintain connection between OctoPrint and the SnapMaker? I set things up this week and I can only seem to get things to talk for a couple of minutes at a time (if I can get the connection to work at all).
That's odd. Is the Pi disconnecting from the printer? Or from the WiFi?
PRO TIP: FLUX IS YOUR FRIEND.
Perfect video for me. Im trying to learn have a junk keyboard (e waste) with a bunch of SMD resistors and transisitors and I can get some off, but once I get one end soft the other end cools off! Feels like a hot air machine would make easy work of them, but I have a bit of solder wick and once I get them off I like to practice reinstalling.
I wanted to hold off responding to this one until I posted my latest video. Have a look at hotplates, too. I've found that it seems to make for an easier time of part removal from boards. :)
recently got a standard PLA bundle deal from them direct and first two reels one silver the other white are a nightmare on my X1C.
Can you give me some advice on how to set up the retraction distance on a snapmaker artisan?
I would expect it to be similar to the Snapmaker 2, given that they're both essentially based on the same thing, but as I don't have one, I can't really test. All I can suggest is to start off at a low value, around 1mm, and then increase the retraction by 0.5mm increments until it gets better and then starts getting worse again. When you see it getting worse, dial it back to the best result you got and then switch to 0.1mm increments.
Is it recommended for bird nature?
It depends on exactly how far away from it you are, but I've found that shotguns are great for picking out bird noises from the environment, especially if you can get fairly close to the sound source. Obviously, it won't be as good as being right on top of them, but it should be able to pick them out well enough to distinguish them. The Synco Mic-D2 should do rather well for it.
I know this is an older video but there are dummy batteries with a usb type c socket that can be plugged in directly to a pd power bank and will eliminate the need for all these extra cables and adapters.
I haven't seen any dummy batteries with build in USB-C sockets, but there are a few batteries that charge over USB-C now instead of requiring a dedicated charger. SmallRig and Nitecore are the two brands that immediately spring to mind, although they don't make them for all camera brands/models.
Solder paste with iron would work too
Does it mount on a mirrorless or a DSLR?
It *can*, but I wouldn't advise it. You'd need some kind of pre-amp to go between the microphone and the camera, even if you can get the microphone in a good spot for the subject. If you need a mic on-camera, I'd look at either the Rode VideoMic NTG or the Sennheiser MKE400 (2nd gen)
i'm getting stringing with your porfiles and the ones from cura ive changed reT settings and temp but it don't get better?
It sounds like the filament might have absorbed moisture from the air. If you don't have a filament dryer, pop your build plate to 40 degrees, stick the filament roll on it with a cardboard box on to hold the heat in and just leave it overnight. Hopefully, that should sort it and then the stringing will go away. :)
Nice review, very good test and super setup! Helped me a lot to choose!
Hi, thanks for it. Do yoou have this paper . With components values.?? I have dificult to identify each one.
Sorry, I didn't see this sooner. I'm afraid I don't have the instructions for this kit anymore, but you should be able to find them online. Check the AliExpress and Amazon listings for it, they often have a list of the components in the images.
HELP!!!! I upgraded my 6+ to 2.5.1 ...now I have a SCREEN PROBLEM!!! can anyone assist as I got no response from FREEWORLD support?
What's up with the surface at 6:31? The "banding"on either side of holes and protrusions? I'm trying to get rid of this effect.
It's where it lays down the filament in different directions. Monotonic ordering solves it, but Cura didn't do that at the time I made this video. I think Prusa Slicer implemented it first, but they didn't have it when I made the video, either.
Can't save printhead calibration, how do I fix this
Do you have a petg snapmaker profile (love the other profiles btw thx)
snapmaker is now on there official list when setting up is there any point to useing your profiles over the ones on list?
It does sound a little muddy on lower mids. Would be interested in hearing it on a device with better preamps to see if their -12dba is true.
which cable needed for Metz 76MZ-5 flash?
Does it take batteries..???
No, not this one. It requires 48v phantom power.
Are you going do profile for abs?
i heard a long time ago that there is a controller that alternates between two ligth sources being video or grow ligth and triggers the camera when the video ligth is on. however back then i didnt need it now i cant find it. got tips ?
Well that's what this does, essentially. It turns off the grow lights when it needs to shoot the photo and then fires the flash when the camera goes off. I've just posted an update to this video, transferring it from the breadboard to an actual PCB.
Great video - so informative, thank you! Incidentally, what’s the music backing track?
@ 0:03 what is the name of that cord ?
So you actually never ever mention how to print TPU. How the heck are people getting you a thumb up.
I use USB mics for my audio for a podcast, would I be able to use them with this?
Hows dat real life stuff going? Part 2 would be siiick. I wanna make one if these and control it over a network.
Do you know how to charge this power bank using a car charger? It should be DC / 18 V or 12 V?
Cool mu brother, thank you.
Have you considered just printing a negative and just molding the stamp with something like pourable rubber or putty?
goog idea, but you`d still ge thte same lines in the stamp that you would pour. also, the only benefit would be potentially softer material, but for a lot of trouble.. not a bad idea though
Really good! Thanks for your explanation 👍 Much love 💕 Matthias 👋
